How Much Does an Ethical Safari in Tanzania Cost?

Introduction

A safari in Tanzania is one of the most extraordinary travel experiences in the world. Every year, thousands of travelers visit the national parks of Tanzania, such as the Serengeti, the Ngorongoro Crater, or Tarangire National Park, to observe lions, elephants, giraffes and the famous Great Migration.

However, one question often comes up when planning a trip:how much does a safari in Tanzania cost?

The price of a safari in Tanzania can vary depending on several factors: the duration of the safari, the type of accommodation, the season, the national parks visited, and the number of participants.

Today, more and more travelers are also interested in organizing an ethical or responsible safari, which supports wildlife conservation and local communities.

1. Factors that influence the price of a safari

Safari duration

The duration of a safari naturally influences the total cost. Most safaris in Tanzania last between 4 and 7 days, allowing travelers to discover several parks in the northern circuit.

Many travelers also choose to combine their safari with a stay in Zanzibar. In that case, the total trip usually lasts between 10 and 15 days, depending on how much time travelers wish to spend on safari and relaxing on the beach.

It is important to understand that in a safari and Zanzibar combined trip, the safari portion usually represents the largest part of the budget. Unlike a beach stay, a safari requires significant logistics: a specialized 4x4 vehicle, an experienced guide, fuel, park entrance fees, and accommodations located in protected natural areas.

For this reason, reducing the number of days in Zanzibar does not necessarily reduce the overall cost of the safari.

Accommodation level

The level of accommodation also affects the price of the safari. Travel agencies generally use three main categories.

Budget

The most affordable safaris often involve camping or simple tented camps. These options allow travelers to reduce costs but may involve:

  • simpler comfort

  • shared facilities

  • larger groups.

Mid-range

Mid-range lodges and tented camps offer private rooms with bathrooms and a good level of comfort. This is currently the most popular option among travelers.

Luxury

Luxury lodges offer a high-end safari experience with exceptional locations, premium services and often spectacular views over the savannah.

Private safari or group safari

The type of safari also influences the price.

Private safari

The vehicle and guide are reserved exclusively for you. This option offers more flexibility, privacy and a personalized safari experience.

Group safari

When travelers share the safari vehicle, costs are divided between participants.

The more people there are in the vehicle, the lower the price per person becomes because they share:

  • the safari vehicle

  • fuel costs

  • the guide.

For example, a safari for six or seven people is usually significantly cheaper per person than a safari for two travelers.

The season

Safari prices also vary depending on the time of year.

High season

  • July

  • August

  • December

  • January

During these periods, demand is very high and lodge prices increase.

Low season

  • April

  • May

Prices can be lower during this period, but there is also a higher risk of rain.

Between these periods, the shoulder seasons can offer a good balance between weather conditions and prices.

The national parks visited

The choice of national parks in Tanzania also affects the safari price.

Among the more affordable parks in northern Tanzania are:

  • Tarangire National Park

  • Lake Manyara National Park

  • Arusha National Park, where walking safaris are possible

  • Mkomazi National Park.

Some parks are more expensive.

Serengeti National Park

The Serengeti is one of the most famous national parks in the world and an iconic destination for safari travelers.

In the Serengeti, several costs are calculated per person and per night, including:

  • park entrance fees

  • concession fees

  • accommodation

  • vehicle and guide logistics.

Ngorongoro Crater

The Ngorongoro Crater, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, also has higher entry fees.

This unique ecosystem offers an exceptional concentration of wildlife.

2. Average price ranges for a safari

To give an approximate idea, here are some price ranges for a 5 to 7 day safari in northern Tanzania, based on a group of six people sharing the vehicle.

Budget safari 1800 to 2500 € per person

Mid-range safari 2500 to 4000 € per person

Luxury safarifrom 4500 € per person

These prices usually include:

  • 4x4 safari vehicle

  • professional safari guide

  • accommodation

  • meals

  • national park entrance fees.

3. The impact of a responsible safari

A responsible safari in Tanzania aims to have a positive impact on wildlife conservation and local communities.

At Kihomi Safari, we try to support local initiatives so that tourism contributes positively to the regions where we operate.

Together with the French association Earth Citizen Club, we contributed to the construction of a maternity clinic in the village of Kombo, in the Kilimanjaro region. Before this project, medical infrastructure was extremely limited, with only two hospital beds for a population of around 200,000 people.

This project aims to improve access to healthcare for pregnant women and families in the village.

Responsible tourism also involves fair working conditions for local teams. For example, safari guides are sometimes paid around 20 dollars per day in some structures. At Kihomi Safari, we have chosen to pay our guides about 50% more, in order to value their expertise and work.

Conclusion

A safari in Tanzania is a unique experience that allows travelers to discover some of Africa’s most spectacular landscapes and wildlife.

Understanding the cost of a safari in Tanzania also helps travelers appreciate the logistics and the many people involved in making such an experience possible.

Choosing a responsible safari in Tanzania means not only enjoying an unforgettable adventure, but also contributing to wildlife conservation and the development of local communities.

At Kihomi Safari, we organize tailor-made safaris in Tanzania, visiting the main parks of the northern circuit such as Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire and Lake Manyara.
